State Tops All Others In Gains

Southeast leads 1949 in increased manufacturing with North Carolina and Georgia driving the regional shift from farming. Nationally, value added by manufacture rose 263 percent vs the Southeast’s 290 percent. North Carolina tops all states in growth, followed by Georgia and Tennessee.

Delayed poisoning claim ends in radium deaths

In East Orange New Jersey Mrs. Florence C Cassey aged 51 died after radium poisoning linked to decades-old practice of wetting a paint brush with her lips to apply radium to clock numerals. Dr Martland said the brush-wetting method released particles causing bone cancer and made her the 41st U S Radium Corp victim.

Britain hails Eagle as first major atomic war carrier

In London Britain previews its new aircraft carrier Eagle Mon day, billed as the world’s first major ship built for atomic warfare. The 36,800 ton vessel is described as virtually unsinkable due to new fire and flood control methods and can carry atomic bombs. Steps are noted to lessen vulnerability to atomic blasts and radiation, while Navy retains its traditional “secret weapon” of a riru for every seagoing sailor.
