Israeli commandos blew up road and rail bridges between Amman and northern Anaba in retaliation for at least 50 Arab sabotage attacks from Jordan since November 16. Two civilians were killed and four injured. Helicopters evacuated the commandos before Jordanian troops arrived as the raid marked the second Israeli operation in a month, following an October 31 strike on two Nile bridges and a power station after Egyptian artillery fire across the Suez Canal. In North and South Carolina, temperatures will stay above normal Tuesday through Saturday with highs 53 to 70 and lows 35 to 61, with periodic showers.
The report describes Israeli air, artillery, and commando operations against Jordan, including shelling Beisan Valley areas, raids near Irbed, and destruction of bridges. Jordan cites casualties among civilians and soldiers, while Israel mentions highway and railroad disruption and a convoy attack near Kfar Yuba. Talks with Gunnar Jarring were set to resume in Cyprus.

A House panel report details police violence during the Chicago Democratic convention, accusing officers of beating demonstrators and newsmen while clashes with protesters near the downtown hotel escalated. It notes a minority of police committed abuses, with several reporters attacked despite credentials. The report also cites pacifist David Dellinger as offering guarded approval of some findings.
A task force report on Chicago violence condemns police procedures and calls for action against officers. It warns that without discipline, other officers will falter and protests will continue as the Violence Commission plans a broader inquiry. The panel notes many injuries, including 192 officers and 101 demonstrators, and criticizes police treatment of reporters while noting protesters sought camera attention.
