In Panmunjom the opening Allied round to win back 351 POWs saw 30 South Koreans vote for communism. Observers note the camp choice was controlled by Communist elements and question the process as more South Koreans are to be interviewed.
The United Steelworkers began a strike against American Can Co and Continental Can Co affecting about 60 000 workers in 68 plants across 30 states and five Canadian plants. Plants closed at midnight with crew passives and pickets on duty. no violence reported. The walkout targets wage gains and benefits as negotiators failed to reach an agreement.
United Nations delegates mostly oppose debating the Korean issue now as talks for a peace conference proceed. The Soviet bloc pushes for immediate discussion, while the United States Britain and India signal caution amid Panmunjom diplomacy and a Dec 8 target date for resuming session.
Ex president Harry Truman was surprised by a bystander greeting in New York as a doorman called out Good Morning Mr Hoover. Truman apologized, noting Herbert Hoover the other living ex president stays at the Waldorf Astoria during visits.
Longshoremen returned to their posts in New York and New Jersey after a one day stoppage marking bi state control of the harbor. North Carolina's new Safety Responsibility Law goes into effect Jan. 1. Motor Vehicles Commissioner Edward Scheidt says it offers greater protection, requires two accident reports and proof of ability to meet damages up to 11 000, and enforces loss of license for uninsured drivers failing to deposit security within 60 days.
President Eisenhower backed Secretary Dulles in declaring unity among free nations our only hope for survival in the face of the Soviet threat. He avoided naming Senator McCarthy while defending U.S. foreign policy, and said communism must be out of government by next year’s elections.
The Navy orders personnel not to repeat atomic matter unless pre checked by the Atomic Energy Commission. Statements must go through Fred Seaton for clearance, covering weapons capabilities, numbers, deployment and storage. The rule applies to new remarks and to refutations of published reports. The Navy acted first among the armed services to implement the order.
