Police said a burning piece of wood from an open fireplace sparked a fire in a three room frame house in Birdtown. Louise Lossiah, 24, and her children Lizzie Marie 2 and Martha Ann 14 months, plus Nancy Johnson 15, died. Five others escaped.

President elect Eisenhower named Martin P. Durkin as secretary of labor, a Democratic union leader who vowed to seek changes to Taft Hartley. Sinclair Weeks was chosen for secretary of commerce, with Walter Williams named undersecretary of commerce. Durkin, a Chicago born plumber turned AFL official, said he may need to switch parties to serve in the cabinet and aims to ease labor tensions and meet Taft and union leaders to discuss revisions. Durkin, a Catholic, promised peacemaker role while Tobin praised the pick.
Republican plan to cut personal income taxes by about 5 percent next June 30 gains Democratic support in Congress. Rep Daniel Reed outlines a phased approach advancing half of the tax cut from December 31 to June 30 at an estimated cost of 1.8 billion dollars, with the remaining 6 percent scheduled for December 31, 1953.
