Dr. James A. Johnson, a High Point neurosurgeon, was appointed by Gov. Jim Hunt as the third High Pointer on the 17 member North Carolina Medical Care Commission. He joins Chairman Holt McPherson and Dr. Joan F. Lynch Jr., with the panel overseeing hospital licensure, health education loans, EMS regulation, and hospital bonds. Johnson, in private practice with High Point Neurosurgical Associates, serves at Thomasville Community General Hospital and High Point Memorial Hospital, and has ties to Duke and UVA medical training and naval service. He and his wife Billie own Galilean Extended Care Facility.

State Funds Won't Offset Inmate Costs
Guilford County Sheriff Paul Gibson says state payments of 10 dollars per day per inmate in county jails do not cover costs. He notes Guilford spends about 13 dollars daily per prisoner and that up to 20 inmates shifted from state to county facilities. The rate applies retroactively to July 1 but contracts after December 31 won’t be retroactive.
