Regime May Seize Selassie Assets for Drought Relief
The Ethiopian military council announced that Haile Selassie signed a letter authorizing transfer of his and his family's fortunes to aid drought victims. The move would place holdings in the Addis Ababa bank of the Ethiopian Relief and Rehabilitation Commission. Authorities say assets include money, bullion, jewels, stocks, and other properties possibly worth up to 15 billion dollars, with much holdings abroad. The declaration noted the transfer to help alleviate the famine and thousands have already died. Empress Menen and descendants are covered by the measure.
