Discrimination case tests steel worker rights in appeals court
About 60 000 minority steel workers face a pivotal appeal over a consent decree settling suits charging race and sex discrimination in seniority and pay. The U S government union and nine major steel firms reached the agreement in April, granting $30 million in back pay and ordering reforms. Critics say the decree may bar future suits and limit agency oversight while placing enforcement on the companies. The 9 firms named include Allegheny Ludlum Armco Bethlehem Steel Jones & Laughlin National Steel Republic Steel United States Steel Wheeling Pittsburgh Youngstown Sheet & Tube. The case proceeds before the 5th U S Circuit Court in New Orleans.
