Seven jurors selected for the Loray textile worker strike murder case as 27 talesmen were examined without addition to the jurors. Judge Barnhill urged haste while both sides faced many challenges and repeated adjournments.
Alfred Hoffman the southern organizer for the United Textile Workers and more than a hundred other union members were arrested in Marion North Carolina on riot incitement charges stemming from a clash between Clinchfield mills strikers and deputy sheriffs. Sheriff Oscar Adkins of McDowell county issued 148 warrants.
The Hague reports a three week reparations conference reached an agreement toward liquidating postwar issues and adjourned subject to the president's call. Subcommittees were formed on bank of international settlements, enemy property liquidation, Dawes to Young plan adjustments, and railroad bonds. Separately, NC strife continued with mob violence at Clinchfield mills drawing troops and arrests amid Labor Day guard buildup.
Los Angeles news reports film comedian Al St Johns was released under a writ of habeas corpus from an indefinite jail term for failing to pay $1,600 in back alimony to his former wife. The defense argued Superior Judge Charles Burnell exceeded his authority in sentencing him to a county rock pile.

J W Hedgpeth 76 of Fairmount killed instantly when his car was struck by a Sea Board Air Line passenger train at the National mill crossing near Lumberton. His son Wardell, also of Fairmount, injured with non life threatening injuries. eye witness J W Roark said the car stalled on tracks as the train approached.
Raleigh August 31 report shows July shipments of vitreous china plumbing fixtures and related chinaware used in drainage systems from 27 manufacturers to the department of commerce totaling 306 403 pieces. This compares with 282 945 in June and 275 145 in July 1928.
Moscow reports the Soviet government accepted Chinese settlement efforts over the Chinese Eastern Railway crisis. Litvinov said Russia would sign a joint declaration with Nanking, proposing a new directorate chairman while maintaining current managers, linking appointment to the accord.
Major John Wood and Captain Roscoe Turner push eastward in monoplanes seeking the $10,000 prize in the Cleveland air races. Parker of Cleveland aboard the return voyage, the first airship flight for the Parker widow.
Dr Walter L Lingle named president elect arrives from Richmond Va and begins duties directing the college for its ninety fourth session opening September 12. He works with treasurer F L Jackson and former president emeritus W J Martin while settling into the president's home adjacent to the campus.
In Cleveland Aug 31 tribute to Thomas A Edison marked the national air races. The Edison lamp helped aeronautics as the golden jubilee of his invention is celebrated with races and a Cleveland to Milan Ohio flight. Attendees included Henry Ford Harvey Firestone Brigadier General W E Gilmore and others. Edison could not attend due to health risks.
Captain Ira K. Baker piloting the Shuttle reenlisted for a refueled endurance flight bound for New York accompanied by co pilot Lieut Bernard Thompson. The attempt will not count toward the record as AAA rules require landing at takeoff point. Baker recently wed while funding his honeymoon via the flight earnings and the Emsco Aircraft Company of Downey backs the race effort.
Graf Zeppelin will travel to Alaska in early spring for Arctic explorations with Fairbanks as a base. Governor George A. Parks and Major Malcolm Elliott, president of the Alaska road commission, have been advised by Ernest Walker Sawyer, executive assistant to the Secretary of the Interior.
