Brother Leads Police To Secret Cache In Bank Robbery Case

Adrill Strickland, 25, led officers to a cache under a railroad trestle in Williamston containing most of about $17,000 stolen from a Williamston bank. The total later recovered was $17,348. The trio's crime spree included a second bank holdup in Garner, near Raleigh.

The Enterprise and High Point radio stations located Mrs. Bennie Watson step mother of Pfc Joseph Watson last night confirming his release from a North Korean prison camp. Watson 20 joined Marines November 27 1951 and was captured October 26 1952. The family formerly lived in Chadbourne then Gresham Washington D C.

Youth Urged To Return To School In North Carolina

State Labor Commissioner Forrest H. Shuford urged 10 000 North Carolina teen workers to quit summer jobs and go back to school this fall He warned that skipping education risks lower future earnings and advancement and stressed the need for a trained workforce to raise per capita income and living standards in the state.

69 Year Old Man Dies In Cane Duel

In Birmingham Alabama a 69 year old man died after a cane duel over a $3 debt. Isaac Magwood aged 59 was jailed on a murder charge. Police say both men carried canes and fought at a mutual friend's home after Johnson demanded repayment.

Soviets Seal East German Factories Arrest 100 in Riot

Soviet troops and Communist police occupied several East German factories to end anti-Communist demonstrations and arrested at least 100 workers. In East Berlin 200 protesters clashed over a ban on collecting Eisenhower food packages. 15 were arrested. Reports from Telegraf and NW German radio could not be independently confirmed.

Perth reports for 20 years W A Jones carted water to his wheat farm near Latham for washing and drinking. His son bored near the house and found an ample supply 80 feet down, ending the long water haul.

RALEIGH August 29 indications are that United Kingdom purchases of U S flue cured tobacco during the current season will probably be no greater and may be even less than in 1952 The UK imported about 10 million pounds last year and the Tobac co Associates Inc report says purchases may be held to around 100 million pounds this year If true UK stocks would be reduced to a 12 months supply by the start of the 1954 55 marketing year and it would be necessary to buy a year s supply annually to stay above the minimum working level
