Growth of High Point Scout Movement Since Inception
The High Point scouting program has shown remarkable growth over 16 years as the first Negro troops in North Carolina helped shape its development. From founding under John Hanes and Frank Sizemore with local chambers and civic clubs to the creation of Uwharrie council, the movement expanded to 789 members, extended to Rowan County, and produced early Eagle Scouts including Charles Parker and Houston Hiatt Jr. Troop 4 at Wesley Memorial Church, led by O. Derk Smith since 1925, gained national recognition for 10 Eagle Scouts and two Harmon Foundation scouts in seven years.
