Otto Vierkoeten of Germany swam the English Channel in 12 hours 40 minutes, beating Miss Gertrude Ederle’s previous record. Landing at Langdon Stairs near Dover, he was cheered by a small group of soldiers and ferried to a tug. This makes him the eighth person to swim the Channel and first man to do so this year.
