British troops report rapid gains on the Somme including captures at Combles Bullecourt Hembecourt-Les-Cagnicourt and Clery-Sur-Somme. East of Arras forces penetrate 2000 yards toward the Drocourt Queant line and take Riencourt as reports from the British War Office arrive.
British forces break through the Hindenburg line around Arras advancing from Bullecourt to Riencourt and Combles. West of Peronne the British seize Clery while crossing the Somme south of Peronne. French Mangin’s troops repel German counterattacks between the Ailette and Aisne and hold east of Passy near Soissons.
Paris reports say the British line north of the Somme has moved east of Combles with Peronne expected to fall. Newspapers note lighter allied losses while capturing many prisoners, guns, material and territory in the continued operations.
British Army reports gains in France with Noon-Birchef near Peronne captured and Lesboeufs entered. Patrols moved through Morval to the southeast as forces pressed eastward along the Somme and advanced beyond the river north of the Somme. The Bapaume Peronne high road area was reported captured.
Paris Progress southeast of Arras is the key feature of the battle news. Canadians appear to be advancing along the Arras Cambrai road and widening the break in the line that the British retired from 18 months ago. A larger success in this area could spoil Germany’s plan for a defensive push on this front as Germans withdraw hastily.
London reports that the average price level on July 3 1918 was two per cent higher than June 1 1918 and 110 per cent higher than July 1914. Milk eggs butter and potatoes led the June advance in price.
San Juan August 10 United States Employment Service chief F C Roberts announced that several thousand Porto Rican women will soon be registered and ready to go to the United States to aid in war work. They will be classified to meet specific needs and many have commercial training for offices of exporting houses with business in Spanish speaking regions.
Fires indicating a retreat of German forces from the northern British front and the Lys salient are observed. Numerous explosions are heard behind the enemy lines as the withdrawal proceeds.
Two men died when a plane plummeted 2000 feet during a top loop near Wichita Falls Texas. Lieutenant R McGiffiin from Fresno California and Cadet Ellis Bernard Babcock from Washington DC perished instantly in the crash.
With General Humbert's forces in France they yesterday captured Noyon and moved toward Simeon. They resumed attacks this morning and are pushing up the tough heights north of the Oise as the advance continues.

French dispatches report troops at the gates of Ham on August 29. German forces suffered heavy losses near Breuil five miles west of Ham, with three full units wiped out in a disorderly retreat.
All banks in the city will be closed on Monday September 2 in observance of Labor Day. The holiday coincides with the Sunday date for the year.
A Guilford Board of Education series meeting will be held Saturday at 3 PM at Springfield church south of High Point. Speakers include Thomas R. The Sunday school flag unveiling follows the lesson, while the main auditorium flags are presented at the 11 o clock service. An honor roll, music and addresses accompany both services. families are urged to attend.

Cornelius S Brown father of Charles M Brown City Editor of the Enterprise died at his home 706 South Elm Greensboro last night at o o clock after weeks of illness. He was born in Moore county 73 years ago and lived in Greensboro 20 years. Funeral Saturday 11 at Moon's chapel Chatham county Rev James A Clark to officiate. Interment in church burial ground. He married Margaret Edwards and is survived by three children Mrs J F Teague Mrs H D McPherson and Mr Brown. He was a Confederate veteran and trusted by friends.
Germany faces a serious tin shortage with no satisfactory substitute yet. The Hamburg Correspondent notes Upper Silesian tin plate plants mainly serving army orders, a new plant for reworking scrap tin plate has opened, and mines once deemed too poor are now worked. Paraffin paper containers replace tin cans for dairy and fruit, and untinned steel sheets are widely used as substitutes.
In Peking on June 20 a $20 million loan agreement for the Kirin Huining railway project was signed by Tsae Ju-lin the minister of communications and Japanese bank representatives. The proposed line runs from Kirin to Korea about 277 miles and will be known as the Ki Hui railway.
Two naval aviators were killed and a third injured when their aircraft nose dived into the bay last night. The dead are James Lloyd Churchill of Syracuse New York and Dewitt Clifford Wilcox of Massachusetts. Anthony Seher of Brooklyn sustained minor injuries.
Washington reports unexpected obstacles developed in the senate today to final passage of the manpower bill extending the army draft to ages 18 to 45, but leaders pressed ahead with confidence of sending the measure to President Wilson later in the day.
Washington reports a casualty list totaling 113 names in section one with 52 killed in action. North Carolina serviceman Dillard S. Pearson of Moravian Falls is listed as missing in action. Section two lists 113 names with 49 killed in action, including Hammet D. Harris of Thomasville. Paul FE Jones of Winston-Salem is noted as a private, 51 N Pleasant Street. Ephrim E. Jones of Rocky Mount is wounded severely along with Murphy N. Matthews.
Advices from Turkish and Arabian sources describe mutinies in the Turkish army with troops at Konia seizing arms and forming a revolutionary center in Asia Minor. Similar revolts are reported in Smyrna and Aidin. In the Caucasus the Brest-Litovsk outcome stalls Turkish advances against Armenians and Georgians.

Dispatches from Munich report that 260000 workers in Westphalia's Bochum have staged major strikes. About three thousand strikers were sent to the front and 8000 were deported under escort as troops guard the town amid fear of riots.
