Mothball Fleet Of Value Under Scrutiny By Navy
The Inactive Fleet, about 422 ships at four sites, faces budget scrutiny as it remains for emergencies. Philadelphia yard holds around 40 ships and barges, with workers led by John Price noting the $13 million annual cost and arguing ships aided Britain in 1939. Price, a former navigator on Northampton and Springfield, keeps memories of the fleet as aging vessels lose up-to-date electronics and missiles.
