Counties weigh recreation tax and city inclusion

Commissioner Robert Shaw backed a year round recreation program that could aid elderly and preschoolers. James Richards said it could spawn a major department for all ages. The county ran a $55,000 25 location summer program from $80,000 in revenue sharing funds, drawing about 1,200 daily. Officials cited transportation gaps as a key issue and explained why cities were left out of voting. If the plan expanded, county revenue sharing would rise by about $283,000 while cities would lose the same amount. Estimates suggested $250,000 was needed to launch. In other business, $46,000 was shifted within Greensboro schools to fund swimming pools at two high schools, though a central facility was proposed to cut costs.
