A midnight blaze in Sanford North Carolina destroyed the Johnson Beauty Shop and Sanford Optical Co. Windows exploded. glass sprayed spectators but no injuries were reported. Fire Chief J O Bridges said the optical firm rear suffered the heaviest damage with smoke affecting nearby Sanford Loan Co dental offices and J D Ennis accounting firm on the Western Auto building second floor.
President Eisenhower and Prime Minister Macmillan met at Chequers to discuss Western strategy toward the Soviet Union ahead of Eisenhower's planned talks with Nikita Khrushchev. They planned further discussions on West Berlin disarmament nuclear tests and allied strength.

Judge William J Bundy orders another venire to be drawn as many potential jurors are excused for opposition to capital punishment. Stocks is charged with killing his former wife on December 20 and wounding a man at the home where she stayed.
In New York the Festival of St. Augustine drew a mass appeal to end teenage gang warfare. A two year truce collapsed last Sunday amid savage violence, leaving Theresa Gee age 15 and Julio Rosario age 14 dead, with several others injured. The Times notes many youth gang leaders agreed to quit the Lower East Side for temp jobs or camps, coordinated by settlement houses and the Lower East Side Neighborhood Assn.
At the Los Angeles County Courthouse, Leonard Glaser faces a boycott as a workers’ snack bar controversy unfolds. An adjacent cheaper first floor operation undercuts his rent based lunch, prompting price hikes and reduced patronage. County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn flags the issue while efforts to salvage business include free coffee and doughnuts for 3 hours.
In Cheyenne Wyoming an unknown thief stole Glenn Parker's car from a spot near his office. Parker is a Wyoming Supreme Court judge and the car contained golf shoes. The theft occurred just as Parker was preparing to depart for a golf match.
