The meeting also announced bids on highway projects with Sanford Construction Co. the low bidder at 115 314 dollars for a bridge on North Carolina 35. Anderson of Atlanta represented the U S Bureau of Public Roads at the session.

After reconsidering 151 rejected applicants, the board notified U S District Judge Walter E Hoffman that 17 will join white classrooms while 134 others remain denied due to integration concerns.
Gov. Orval Faubus extends the Arkansas legislative session to Jan 10 keeping anti integration bills in limbo. Lawmakers plan to return later today as a special session remains technically in effect. A Supreme Court ruling on Little Rock integration is not expected until after Sept 11.
A 30 year old Raleigh man Richard Sympel Townes Jr faces federal trial for robbing the Laurinburg State Bank branch of 7508 dollars. Authorities say 302 dollars were found on him and 6937 were found at his home. Townes was arraigned and held without bond for a December 2 Middle District Court session in Rockingham. Police said the robbery occurred noon Monday and a gunman with an adhesive bandage carried out the theft.
