William Proxmire, a 41 year old liberal Democrat, won a stunning upset in Wisconsin’s special U.S. Senate election to fill McCarthy’s seat. He defeated three time governor Walter Kohler, providing Democrats with 50 seats to 46 for Republicans. Proxmire carried about 56 percent of the nearly 800,000 votes cast, with final unofficial totals from 3,357 precincts showing 435,085 for Proxmire and 313,631 for Kohler. Independent candidates drew under 24,000 votes.
