V F W Post to Offer Veteran Benefit Forms at Local Sites
High Point VFW announces application blanks will be available at the VFW Home on West Broad Street next to the bus station starting Monday evening August 29 and every evening thereafter as long as needed. Veterans may obtain help filing. Blanks also at Ace Service and Supply Co. 1934 English Street daily 8 am to 5 pm. A Veterans Service Survey will accompany filings to determine benefit entitlements. The post officer will discuss benefits with applicants.

Heart disease remains NC's top killer in first half of 1949
North Carolina health officials report 4,448 deaths from heart disease in the January to June period, up from 4,287 a year earlier. Strokes and cancer also rose, with 1,829 and 1,499 deaths respectively, while auto accidents caused 419 fatalities and other accidents 624. Births outpaced deaths but both lagged 1948 levels.
