French and British armies advance in a new blow as the center of the German line between Roye and the Somme collapses. Thirty towns fall to French forces in the offensive.
Paris August 28 Chaulnes captured by French according to War Department. French progress toward the Somme continues with 30 villages taken since yesterday including Omiecourt Balatre Boiglise and Verpillieres. Mangin’s army reportedly crossed the Ailette as French forces reoccupy Mt Renaud near Noyon and press toward the city. The German retreat on the Somme remains under pressure with cavalry harassing retreating columns.
Albemarle residents plan to travel Friday to Sunshine Institute in Rutherford county for a reunion of Prof Stallings former students. Many who studied under him at Big Lick academy or Sunshine Institute will attend on Friday and Saturday, reflecting his years as superintendent there from 1902 to 1904.
Dr W T Laprode a long time professor of European history at Trinity College will take a year long leave away from the college. He will conduct courses on the war’s historical background for army and navy secretaries at Blue Ridge YMCA training school Ridge and visit army camps in the southeast to confer with resident secretaries and lecture to soldiers.
Washington reports Representative Frank P. Woods of Iowa who failed to secure renomination offered his resignation as chairman of the Republican congressional committee.

Excavations near Tokio uncover a 17 foot wooden canoe buried over 3,000 years ago. Archaeologists believe the area was inhabited by the Ainu race at that time.
In Paris on July 17 Terry Murphy a Pittsburg lightweight knocked a German lieutenant unconscious with a punch after using the butt of a gun in close bayonet fighting. Murphy part of a unit brigaded with French forces near Coutteau Thierry where volunteers trained and saw front line duty.
New York traders saw a renewal of yesterday's high prices at the cotton market opening. Liverpool selling and scattered southern activity followed, with active months dropping initially 15 to 25 points before recovering to 25 to 35 points higher. Thomasville recorder FE Westmoreland was arrested on a federal warrant for violating espionage act provisions. Westmoreland, about 54, had been alleged to have made statements questioning food laws and U S submarine activity.
Nogales Arizona August 28 An agreement to avoid more trouble was expected after a conference between American and Mexican officials in Nogales. The meeting follows yesterday’s border fighting in which three American soldiers were killed and 28 wounded. Mexican casualties were reported at 150 to 200.
The Newfoundland schooner Bianca, a three masted vessel from Brazil bound to a Canarian port with tobacco, was captured and sunk by a German submarine Saturday night. Her crew were landed today.
