Lt Eugene Shurtz Jr 26 of Davenport Iowa was relieved by Lt Col Robert C Bacon Falls Church Va and reassigned to the 196th Light Infantry Brigade after Alpha Company refused to move out on Nui Lon Mountain. Capt Bernard F Wolpers replaced him as commander as five enlisted men questioned orders but later joined the attack. No charges or formal investigation were announced. The company remains in the field with no major fighting since last Saturday.
Navy nuclear chief Hyman Rickover told a House panel that the Soviet Union is rapidly overtaking the United States in submarine force. He cited 230 more submarines overall and projected the Soviets could surpass U.S. Polaris subs by 1973 or 1974, as Washington seeks a $1.18 billion nuclear ship program.
Consumer advocate Ralph Nader charges many federal agencies deny press and public access under the Freedom of Information Act. In a 20 page report with about 100 students, they cite specific instances of withheld information across agencies and note a Tuesday news conference.
