The Associated Press reports Spanish fascist rebels on the Biscay Bay front claim an open road toward Madrid about 40 miles north of the capital, signaling a potential advance in the civil conflict.
Reports from the Iberian conflict describe General Mola's forces nearing Madrid while government lines halt a new rebel onslaught in Iran Sebastian. Socialist Prieto blames France and Britain for aiding the denfense, and a Madrid rightist coalition foresees an international showdown between fascism and leftist forces. An American-made plane found in Innsbruck suggests possible plans to return Alfonso.
George Henry Dern, secretary of war in the Roosevelt cabinet, died at Walter Reed Hospital at 10:55 A.M. Eastern from heart complications linked to past influenza. He was 64. Dr. Fritz Meyer assisted the case at Roosevelt's request. Dern had long battled illness since a severe influenza episode in Utah years earlier. Acting secretary Harry H Woodring will assume duties pending Roosevelt appointment.
Col Frank Knox Republican vice presidential nominee accuses President Roosevelt of shadow boxing the economic royalists in a Rockingham County club speech near Hampton Beach New Hampshire. He terms the New Deal policy blank and claims big business dominates while industry suffers and the average citizen is kept in fear.
Vatican dispatch says Pope Pius XI is so worn by the Spanish situation that he hardly rises from his throne and has only brief audiences. AP confirms the prelates shared the alarm over his health and morale.
Adjutant Robert Cowan and Mrs. Cowan arrive with their two children to take charge of activities at the Salvation Army Citadel in High Point. He replaces Advince Shackelford who left for Dallas. Cowan brings 15 years of social service work and a focus on youth programs.
A blaze in Honesdale Pennsylvania killed George Griffin 64 Irene Griffin 46 and children Donald 10 Mildred 7 and Marion 12. Two daughters Jean 8 and Fay 2 were rescued from smoke and hospitalized. Griffin a former state highway employee had been unemployed recently. Neighbors reported the father rescued Jean and Fay before returning to the flames.
The United States declared that Spain must show an effective blockade to bar merchant ships from rebel ports, formalizing the demand in a note to Madrid. Secretary Hull stated that declaring war zones is not enough without enforcement and warned against illegitimate port closures.
Edwin Gill released a stenographic report alleging a new confession by Martin Moore a 22 year old hall boy at a fashionable Asheville hotel. The victim Helen Clevenger a blonde co ed was slain in her room on July 16. Moore was convicted and sentenced to die in the gas chamber October 2 despite denying an earlier confession.

Some delegates moved to discharge the committee led by James A. Simpson as others urged ratification. The report warned ratification should wait until general federal employment policy is assessed.
Albany August 27. Governor Lehman refused to dismiss removal charges against District Attorney William F. X. Geoghan. He ruled that charges tied to a prior term in Kings County may be considered. The defense argued about alleged misconduct, while Stryker claimed police involvement affected political campaigns.

Charles A. Allred, 61, of Randleman route two, was killed in a highway collision near Glenora at 5:30 this morning. O O Lewallen of High Point route three struck the bicycle. Allred suffered a broken neck and died on arrival at Burrus Memorial hospital after ambulance transport.
Five laborers killed and about twenty injured when a truck carrying workers from New Jersey to Florida veered off a guard rail and plunged down a steep embankment at the Convingo dam bridge near Darlington Maryland.
Secretary Wallace refutes reports that President Roosevelt planned a world peace and disarmament conference if re elected. He says the government has had no conversations or discussions about such a meeting despite New York stories. The denial follows reports attributed to the President contemplating a peace conclave to unite major powers.
William Gallacher, a Communist member of the British Parliament, is denied a U S visa under the immigration act. Fred Voliva age 29, formerly of this city and lately of Baltimore, Md., died after plunging from an eighth floor window of a Durham hotel this morning. He was found unconscious and died about 11 15. A nearby worker saw him totter then fall. another report says he jumped. He left notes for his widow and parents, contents sealed.
Chinese reports say two ringleaders were executed in Chengtu after Monday’s riot. Japanese sources claim their two countrymen were found dead outside city walls following clashes tied to the attempt to reopen a local Japanese consulate.
Lind say Loflin of Cedar Falls faces charges of entering his cousin Ed Loflin’s home and attempting to attack Mrs Lilly Loflin while the family slept. A hearing is scheduled before a magistrate Monday after a postponement to prepare the defense. Bond was set at $1000.
Raleigh August 27. State liquor commission hears evidence from law enforcement and hospital officials that there is virtually no difference in drunkenness or crime between wet and dry counties. Officials cite stable admissions to state hospital Dix Hill and lower liquor case percentages in wet counties.
