The government reported mid July living costs rose to a new high as the consumer price index reached 114.7, up from June. Higher food, rent, transport and medical costs pushed the index, affecting about one million auto workers with a one cent wage boost mooted by the rise.
In July eight motorists had licenses suspended under a North Carolina law that suspends driving permits for 30 days after a conviction for 15 mph over the limit. The rule applies to 70 mph limits for autos, with 82 people surrendering licenses for speeds over 70. Two truck drivers had licenses suspended for speeds over 60, and one driver lost a license for aiding and abetting excess speed.
The state will renew its 25 million gallon gasoline contract with Esso Standard Oil Co for another year. Esso cut its proposed price increase by about 37000 dollars and will set new terms when the current contract expires Sept 1. The State Board of Award returned the terms and Director Charles M Williams urged new bids though Esso again submitted the lowest statewide bid.
Federal State Crop Report shows severe drought in Raleigh area and central and northern Piedmont counties. Some improvement where rains fell last week boosts peanuts soybeans cotton and hay. Tobacco harvest nearly finished along coast while Piedmont fields remain active for fall planting.
Thirteen present and five former Morrison Training School employees at Hoffman owe the state 4165.46 for room and board. State Auditor Henry Bridges said payroll deductions will cover the debt, with Superintendent Paul R. Brown guaranteeing payment for others. Brown paid 450 when the issue was raised. Before July 1, 1950 workers at the Negro training school received room and board free. after that date salaries rose to offset that value.
About 400 U.N. troops were released today with indications North Korea will send back additional Americans and others jailed on various charges. Two ex-prisoners reported fellow Americans facing prison terms may be repatriated soon at Kaesong, while 17 British and 250 South Koreans joined the exchange.
New York leaders warn a walkout by Bell System long lines workers could idle 300000 CWA members nationwide. Talks between Bell System officials and the CIO Communications Workers of America stalled with scattered walkouts and violence over trunk cable damage. negotiations resume with no clear progress as stalling accusations fly.
Raleigh Gov Umstead announced two additional special Superior Court judges for two year terms ending June 30 1955. Clarence W Hall of Durham and Peyton McSwain of Shelby join nine prior specials to handle court work. Hall 49 born in Carteret County UNC alumnus and former law partner of the governor. McSwain 58 former legislator and Cleveland County attorney was a 1948 special judge.
Raleigh bids total 2449.04 for 16 road and bridge projects across 16 counties including a Rocky Mount bypass. The Highway Commission will review bids at its Asheville meeting. The Rocky Mount relocation on U S 301 spans 9.2 miles and involves grading and structures. Brown Paving Co of Lexington submitted the low bid for grading at 235349.50 and F A Triplett Inc of Chester SC the low bid for structures at 312509.80.
The Bogue Sound bridge linking Morehead City and Atlantic Beach will be dedicated Sept. 3 with Gov. Umstead among dignitaries. It serves beach traffic Fort Macon State Park and Salter Path. Built by T A Loving and Co. the seven tenths mile concrete span cost 1 339 205 and features an electrically operated steel draw for inland waterway traffic.
Massachusetts stenographer Mildred McDonald sobbed as she admitted shooting Mary Di Rocco, 14, sister of her former boyfriend, at the Di Rocco home in Somerville after learning the brother chose a new wife. Police recovered the gun, knife, cartridges, and bloodstained clothing.
Polk Superior Court opened with three cases involving county officers. Sheriff Loyd Panther faced removal efforts, then resigned. officials consider misconduct allegations. Former County Accountant Jesse Rhodes faced an indictment for assault with intent to kill his wife after a theater manager was shot and later died.
Washington reports the Post Office Department plans to decentralize to regional offices to improve efficiency while keeping policy in Washington. The move mirrors private sector practice and follows Hoover Commission recommendations though details on timing and locations remain undecided.
