Prospects Good For Alligators In South Carolina
Associated Press writer Dave Strickland reports South Carolina has about 40,000 alligators and is slowly recovering from past overhunting. Kenneth B. Stansell of the Wildlife Department says there is no immediate danger of overrun and notes the species may soon be reclassified from endangered to threatened, increasing management flexibility. Alligators are found in about 28 counties and are making a comeback as hunting and exploitation declined after 1969 legislation and 1973 management measures.
