Theater picketers arrested after tense confrontation

Sixteen Black defendants and a white companion were arrested for trespassing as deputies and police moved them from in front of a Center Theater. They offered no resistance. A white man, 24 year old David Beeson, felled demonstrator Stephen Holmes and shattered the theater booth glass during the clash.

Demonstrators Arrested In Melee At Local Theater

Seventeen demonstrators were arrested after a confrontation on private property at a theater. A white man, bleeding from the forearm, surrendered as officers moved in. Glass shattered, injuring Grace Wofford, a ticket cashier, though her injuries were not believed serious. Theater manager W J Evans told CORE demonstrators to leave while Chief J Roy Teague oversaw the incident.
