Shanghai dispatch reports a Japanese naval spokesman warning that any plane entering designated Chinese airspace risks being shot down. He says a Chinese American National Aviation Car plane, forced down by warplanes, was misidentified as a Chinese bomber amid rising tensions in the area.
Philadelphia officials announce a planned test of the prison punishment cells used during the hunger strike deaths. Coroner Hersch and District Attorney Boyle expect at least eight people to be implicated. State investigators, including Charles Engard, will endure the same conditions to assess deliberate roasting.
Minute alletins says the Pennsylvania railroad train "Louis an" suffered a boiler explosion on a downgrade today near a curve by Ce ile between Newark and St Louis. Both enginemen, John Breen and R H Mitchel, were thrown from the cab and died. railroad offices at Columbus report the disaster.
An Arab man was captured in Jerusalem on charges of assassinating W Moffatt a British district commissioner. Moffatt died from bullet wounds after gunmen attacked the district administrative headquarters. The suspect was captured while trying to flee after the shooting.
The Catholic Bishop Sproll of Rottenburg-Stuttgart was expelled from his see after refusing to leave. German officials announced that the expulsion was due to his refusal to vote in the April plebiscite on Austro-German union, marking him the only diocesan citizen to do so.
The American Federation of Labor will protest to President Roosevelt against re appointing Donald Wakefield Smith to the National Labor Relations Board. The move signals a broader campaign to curb the board’s discretionary powers and curb its decisions favoring the C I O. Florence Arnold Tugwell was granted a divorce from Rexford Guy Tugwell, former New Deal adviser, in Yerington Nevada on cruelty alleged as mental. The hearing was closed and papers sealed. They married June 7, 1914 in Buffalo New York and have two daughters.
