Martin Moore, 22, in a Raleigh death row cell insists on his innocence in the July 16 Asheville murder of Helen Clevenger. State supreme court officials warn his appeal must be perfected by tomorrow to allow review by December, as Moore awaits execution.
Martin Moore, condemned slayer of Helen Clevenger, shown humor by deputies on the way to Raleigh. He told a sandwich vendor to charge the meal to him personally and collect on October 3. Moore is sentenced to die in the lethal gas chamber October 2.
Dr. Reid Willis testified the Buncombe County prisoner admitted to the brutal crime after being moved to Central Prison. The condemned man, scheduled for execution October 2, insisted he was whipped into false statements and pleaded innocence despite the confession.
