State officers seek speeders in heightened patrols
Enterprise Bureau Raleigh August 24. Highway patrols statewide are ordered to crack down on reckless driving and speeding after July's rise in accidents. In seven months 412 killed and 2432 injured in 1718 accidents versus 334 killed and 2548 injured in the prior year. Captain Charles Farmer cites speed and recklessness as the main causes and says drivers will be arrested on the spot, not warned. He notes more new cars on roads and speeds of 70 to 90 mph, urging limits of 50 to 55 mph despite car capabilities. The crackdown targets those endangering others on highways.
