Texas Governor Preston Smith says he will comply with court orders if the judiciary blocks or voids the state employee pay raise tied to the Nixon wage-price freeze. He argues the president may lack authority to void duly enacted state law and favors Supreme Court review.
Washington AP draft boards will call men numbered 1 through 50 for physical and mental exams starting Sept 1 as inductions stay suspended. Curtis Tarr said testing ahead of potential call dates helps planning though he cannot predict how many will be called. Congress must pass the draft extension bill for inductions to resume, with Senate action due Sept 13 and a possible Oct 1 vote.
