London Aug 23 Britain's new Labour government introduced legislation to retain wartime controls for five years, including price and service pegs. The measure aims at fair pricing, orderly postwar readjustment, and relief of shortages, as Attlee cabinet leaders outline its goals.
The United States Rubber Company announces a new textile from chicken feather fibers. The fabric resembles wool, yet is softer warmer and lighter with a brilliant feather luster and dyeable colors. Ten broiler chickens yield one yard of fabric, thirty broilers yield an adult suit, and about thirty percent of other fibers are mixed for strength. No chicken odor remains, and the fabric shrinks like cotton.
Lt Gen Wedemeyer said Chinese and British governments are negotiating which forces will occupy Hong Kong and accept Japan's surrender. His remarks followed a Chinese announcement listing Hong Kong among areas for occupation and designating Gen Chang Fuh-Kwei to receive the surrender.
