Remembering Jarrells Hall and early South Main era

In the 100 block of South Main Street two stores are being remodeled while locals recall the area’s early entertainment roots. Elders describe Jarrell's Hall as an 1890s venue that predates the Opera House and hosted varied shows in the Gay Nineties, with tales of Ed Welch and Ed Ellison recalling performances like The Hunchback from 1892. The narrative continues to the rise of the Opera House and early moving pictures at the Eagle, marking the dawn of cinema in a town that would become a furniture hub.
