Illinois State Fair folk arts show long vanished skills
Crowds watched Grace Ater of Chandlerville demonstrate Illinois State Fair folk art with geese feathers and down. Clayville Folk Arts Guild members showcased shingles making quilts embroidery and candle craft while a gunsmith forged a flintlock rifle and artisans carved caned chairs. Ater explained calming the goose and noted geese molt every four to six weeks yielding feathers for pillows and quilts. Feathers from other birds are unsuitable and Europe supplies many current feather pillows. In Brings, England a falcon named Lachlan guarded aircraft at a local airfield to ward off birds.
