Cattle Contamination Brings Fear to Michigan Farmer

Blaine Johnson, a Newaygo County dairy farmer once among the region’s best, faces ruin after his cattle herd was contaminated by feed tainted with a fire retardant. About 100 farmers were affected last May, their cattle quarantined and milk sale halted, while neighbors fearfully ostracize them. Court delays hinder destruction of infected herds and burial sites, and markets refuse hay from affected farms, forcing plowing, cleaning, and rebuilding. Johnson vows to endure, despite pressure and poverty.
