Blue Ridge Dam Plan Blocked by House Committee
Washington AP report says a House Interior Committee narrowly approved a two year study measure to decide if the New River in western North Carolina and Virginia should join the wild and scenic rivers list, potentially halting a $500 million Blue Ridge hydro project that would flood 40 000 acres and displace farm families. The bill would nullify the FPC license for Appalachian Power Co as Congress weighs the fate of the dam amid North Carolina opposition.
