Wheat farmers in Sumner County gain from record crop and high prices
In Wellington Kansas, Sumner County farms a record 15.56 million bushels of hard winter wheat at a record 40 bushels per acre. Prices topped $5 a bushel, allowing farmers to pay debts, buy equipment, and build cash reserves as many hold unsold grain awaiting higher prices.

Cruelty to Animals Charged at Douthat State Park Stables
Alleghany County Humane Society prompted the indefinite closing of horse rental stables at Douthat State Park and led to the arrest of attendant Steven Hurst Young on a misdemeanor cruelty charge. Young, 20, of Walnut Cove North Carolina, posted 250 dollars bond and awaits a hearing. The state leased the stables to F C Hilton of Richmond who runs the riding concession. Warrant alleges deprivation of food and drink to 15 of 16 horses in his care. Horses to be returned to Hilton under Richmond Humane Society supervision. Park superintendent unaware of the incident at the time.

Ocean Forest Hotel in Myrtle Beach changed owners as Ocean City Development Co sold the 43 year old property to Miles Stevens and Dexter Stuckey. No price was released. existing 225 rooms will remain in operation while undeveloped portions of the 12 acre tract are planned for development. Built in 1929 30 for about 1 million dollars the hotel has been operated by Continental Service Corp of Miami.
