State Gives Polio Victims Best Of Care In North Carolina
North Carolina led a large scale polio hospitalization effort with Memorial hospital’s isolation ward expanding into fresh air camps and emergency centers in Hickory Gastonia and other Piedmont counties. The effort used national and state resources and prisoner labor to treat over 500 cases as millions in funding from the March of Dimes supported patient care. Authorities limit gatherings of children under 15 and cancel or postpone events to curb spread while researchers seek answers.
