First American Victory in International Yacht Cup
On August 22, 1851, the United States won the first international yacht cup by the ship America defeating 15 entrants in a race from Cowes to Isle of Wight and back. The feat created the America's Cup, with John C. Stevens and George Steers shaping early American yachting. Lipton’s Shamrock eras followed as challengers, notably in Newport, Rhode Island.
