President Eisenhower warned at a news conference that the Soviet Union aims to take over Syria by a pattern of aid followed by agents and stooges. He stressed the current crisis may not justify U S action under the Middle East program, and noted he does not know how far Moscow has advanced in Syria.

The action spares raw materials weapons and community programs while trimming a new government built power reactor program. If approved, total House deductions in regular appropriation bills this year would exceed 5.4 billion dollars.
In the United Nations Security Council, Soviet backed Arab charges accusing Britain of quelling Oman’s rebellion with troops fell three votes short of necessary support. Russia Iraq Sweden Philippines voted yes while Britain France Australia Cuba Colombia opposed. The United States abstained and Nationalist China did not participate. Arkady Sobolev accused Britain of protecting oil interests. Henry Cabot Lodge cited insufficient info to decide.
Paris bulletin reports Western Allies plan a two year halt to nuclear tests as part of a broader disarmament effort. The move aims to ease Cold War tensions and open avenues for international negotiations.
In Levittown Pennsylvania state police banned gatherings of more than three people near the home of William Myers after a stone injured a police sergeant during a protest against the Myers family moving into their ranch style home. Three persons were fined for disorderly conduct and several arrests were reported as tensions persisted in the suburban community.
Members of the House Agriculture Subcommittee toured tobacco warehouses in Rocky Mount North Carolina to review price supports and operations of the price support program. Lead by Rep Harold D Cooley the group planned tours to Wilson and Greenville and planned discussions with inspectors warehousemen buyers and growers about discounted tobacco price supports.
President Eisenhower said he would accept a compromise civil rights bill with effective voting rights enforcement. He indicated a GOP proposal may be offered soon that sits between his position and the Senate version, while noting no terms were spelled out. He urged a bill to avoid politicizing Americans rights and warned against blocking action for next year.
