A Chain Store Age study based on the 1955 Directory of Drug Chains finds 47 percent of the nation’s chain drug stores operate largely as self-service. Of 1,914 chains with two or more stores, 3,769 stores are self-service or semi-self-service and 686 are fully self-service. The total merchant base totals 1,755,000,000 in annual business with mass display and high turnover driving increased sales across 5,247 stores.
