GAR to hold final 83rd National Encampment in Indianapolis
The Grand Army of the Republic will disband after its 83rd national encampment in Indianapolis due to dwindling numbers. About 23 of 3.5 million Union Army veterans remain, with perhaps five able to attend. National Commander Theodore A. Penland 100-year-old from Indiana plans to preside. Michael Thralls 106 of Idaho and other veterans hope to attend and recall old battles and songs. Indiana Lt. Gov. John Watkins chairs planning for the final muster.
