Thousands of Chinese drown and millions in property loss as the Yangtse floods 9,000 square miles across eighty counties. Hankow Wuchang and Hanyang flee the advancing waters with relief bonds proposed by Nanking. Major crops wiped out and homelessness estimated in the millions.
London Aug 21 The Ramsay MacDonald government faced possible resignation as Britain battles an economic crisis and a half billion dollar deficit. Cabinet efforts to balance the budget failed amid hostile union opposition and a split party, prompting plans for a special Parliament session. Conservative leader Stanley Baldwin rushed back from France as events grew urgent.
Jacob F. Hambright, 59, of Grover, member of the central committee for the Kings Mountain battle centennial event, died after hospital treatment in Rutherfordton. He was a great grandson of Col. Frederick Hambright, an American leader at Kings Mountain. Burial will be in Grover Sunday.
New Orleans cotton conference votes to appoint a committee to draft a law to control cotton acreage. Governor Huey P Long backs a plan to stop cotton planting next year and names a wide roster of state officials and lawmakers to the committee.
Charlotte August 21 AP Organized contractors in the Carolinas revive their campaign against convict labor in highway construction. The Associated General Contractors say the choice between convict and free labor must serve the public interest by employing law abiding citizens in honest toil rather than law breakers.
Mrs. Jesse J. Williams of Clayton was indicted for the murder of her husband, Jesse J. Williams, a Johnston county political leader. The coroner’s jury found he died from a pistol wound. the indictment accuses her of unlawfully killing him on the night of June 26. No trial date set. bond status uncertain.
Charles F. Fisher 65 president of the Columbus Citizen died in Perrysburg Ohio from injuries suffered in an automobile crash on August 11. He had previously been hurt August 11 and died on August 21.
Tarboro news reports former North Carolina state senator Benjamin F. Shelton 74 died at his Speed area home from acute indigestion. He served on the county board of commissioners and was a prominent farmer and local leader. Survived by his widow, three sons and two daughters.
In Raleigh on August 21 Frank D. Grist refused to comment on Charlotte reports that John B. Pharr was fired for not backing him in the Senate primary. Grist had announced Pharr’s resignation and replacement by Charles D. Drury. Pharr denied resigning, suggesting Grist may have heard Pharr would not actively support him.
Halifax County officials report three bankers and three Halifax citizens pled guilty before Judge W. C. Harris in superior court to charges of violating state banking laws. Cases include H H King and J R Myrick charged with $14 355.60 in bank fund abstractions, and R S Travis Sr and J Woss indicted for conspiring to circulate worthless checks totaling 643 000. Additional charges involve $7 368.97 via worthless checks linked to Shearin Motor. Deputies W C Mitchell M P Crawley H L Bell and G M Hamiet await trial. embezzlement cases to be postponed.
Seven Negro passengers sustained minor injuries when Seaboard Air Line train No. 2 from Miami to Hamlet toppled after hitting a washout during a heavy rainstorm in Hamlet. The engine and three cars passed over the washout, but the fourth car derailed and pulled two cars into the wreck. Injured were taken to Seaboard hospital. wrecking crews cleared the tracks and traffic was to resume by noon.
Fayetteville officials debated whether Frank Brady violated a city ordinance over church hour fueling at a local filling station. City Engineer T D Rose testified as defense objected and Major Q K Nimocks Jr ordered a special boundary investigation during the hearing.
Gardner F Wells aged 60 of New York president of the Boston Revere Beach and Lynn railroad was found dead in his office with a 30 30 rifle by his side. He had been shot through the mouth. Police inspectors and medical examiner George Burgess Magrath began an investigation into the circumstances of Wells death.
Arkansas has a 29 year old governor the youngest in state history Ned Stewart president pro tem of the State Senate becomes de facto governor as Governor Parnell and Lieutenant Governor Wilson leave for a cotton conference in New Orleans called by Governor Long of Louisiana.
High Point residents paid 3.35 per person for crime costs, with only Wilmington and Winston-Salem exceeding it among 25 000 plus cities. City totals show Charlotte Durham Greensboro and Raleigh also high in criminal police prosecution and other costs last year.

George Wilkerson and George McRae, jailed for second degree murder in Dup lin county in 1930, were paroled after another convict, Tom Johnson, contradicted his testimony. Johnson had testified they aided in killing Mr Boney. his statement led to a commutation and parole for two others, Joe Berrier and Andrew Brymer, in separate cases.
Stockton Kansas August 21 AP two youths William Francis 17 and Jack Screen 16 are dead and Leland McCall 19 is wounded after a water melon patch quarrel near Stockton. Arthur Merriweather farmer's son is charged with murder for firing on the group at the Merriweather farm a half mile south of Stockton last night.
NEMURO Japan Aug 21 The Lindbergh monoplane towed a short distance toward Muroton Bay Shimushiri Island after being stranded since Wednesday by fog and motor trouble off Ketoi Island The couple reported by wireless they were being towed to safer anchorage and planned to test the motor after a brief work period The perilous night aboard the plane off Ketoi is described by Colonel Lindbergh as the worst he has ever faced.
The seaplane Lempira used by Captain Lisandro Garay to attempt a non-stop New York to Honduras flight arrived in Philadelphia aboard the York after a forced sea landing off North Carolina on August 9. Garay traveled from Savannah to Wilmington and will move the craft to Bellanca Aircraft in Newark for repairs before another attempt.
The 657 page Wickersham commission report cites annual crime costs topping 1.12 billion dollars, with prohibition alone consuming about two thirds of federal criminal justice funds in 1929-30. Major figures show 247 million spent by large cities, 52.7 million by federal justice, and 68 million lost to mail fraud plus 40 million in forgeries.
In Asheville on August 21 the defense for Col Luke Lea and three associates in a $1.3 million fraud case against the Central Bank and Trust Company faced rebuke from Judge M W Barnhill. Attorney Francis spoke for over an hour, and the judge charged an insinuation that special prosecutors McLendon and Johnson were backed by enemies of Lea. McLendon and Johnson testified they were hired by Governor Gardner at Solicitor Zeb Nettles’s request.
The Constitution known as Old Ironsides will dock in Wilmington from November 19 to 23 following naval authorization. The historic warship, long a symbol of the U S Navy, was recommissioned recently and arrives after arrangements were received by local officials.
