Grandfather Mountain caretaker recalls lifelong bond and legends
Joe L. Hartley, 87, talks of 70 years as caretaker of Grandfather Mountain. He recalls forests, trails, and rock walls from earlier eras, notes the mountain’s changing economy and roads, and reflects on his role in starting the annual Singing on the Mountain begun in 1925. He also mentions his book Walking for Health and his long association with local figures and families.
