Washington AP reports that Nixon wage price rent freeze halts most raises for state and local government workers and military personnel. The Cost of Living Council says freezes apply to teachers police and firemen and federal workers, with exceptions only if contracts began before Aug 15.
Longshore leader Harry Bridges says the 49 day West Coast dock strike will continue in full force despite Nixon wage price freeze. He expects resumed talks next week with the Pacific Maritime Association and has called a strike strategy meeting for Monday to push for full bargaining including wages.
In Raleigh and Washington officials expressed optimism that North Carolina teachers will receive 5 percent pay boosts despite a federal wage freeze guide. Dr. Craig Phillips and Burley Mitchell based expectations on July 1 effective dates and contract structures, while Gov. Scott noted funds were appropriated and many teachers are already at new pay levels.
