Winsted Rebuilds After Floods Drowned Seven
Winsted Connecticut recovers from the August Mad River flood that drowned seven and caused more than 12 million dollars in damage. Joe Isaacson, a 53 year old store owner, rebuilds with SBA aid and local support as the town relocates utilities and plans a five million dollar dry dam. Industries revive, bridges are rebuilt, and housing expands under state and federal funding.

Sensitive Strain Gauges May Foretell Earthquakes
In Pasadena California researchers use sensitive strain gauges in mountain tunnels to measure long term rock strain buildup. Developed by Dr Hugo Benioff at Caltech the gauges could predict quakes by detecting crustal stress before slip events while network plans extend to the Andes and Peru. Continuous seismograph data in Southern California support ongoing earthquake area studies.
