The House passed a 526 million dollar low cost housing bill 274 to 86, clearing the way for federal loans and grants to state and municipal housing projects. A Senate-House reconciliation must occur before sending the measure to the White House as adjournment nears.
Henry Grady Owens principal of High Point High School and Wade E. Marlette athletic director resign, effective soon, turning in notices to Superintendent Charles F. Carroll Jr. Owens will join Salem College in Winston-Salem as education professor. Marlette may take a Maine post. Owens joined High Point in 1919 and never missed a day except on school business. He became principal after L. R. Johnston’s 1933 departure and kept libraries and courses during economic difficulties.
Senator Bankhead of Alabama urged President Roosevelt to authorize a government loan of 10 cents a pound on cotton, arguing a 10 cent loan would yield better returns for farmers despite a 12 cent market. He noted a 2 cent subsidy would cover the gap, with payment pending crop control law compliance. McAdoo’s bill continued to be studied by a Senate subcommittee.
