Half a million residents fled Taegu as North Korean forces neared, sparking chaos across the refugee city. Red Army advances and shelling pushed civilians to evacuate. many buried belongings, others cooked meals by lantern light while a provisional government ordered non essential civilians to depart for safety.
Below freezing conditions spread across Michigan and the Great Lakes region with 30 degrees above reported in Grand Marais Michigan. Grantsburg Wisconsin recorded near freezing after a week of heat with a cool air mass moving southeast toward the Atlantic coast.

Sobell is the eighth arrestee in a roundup of Americans accused of aiding a Soviet spy ring. The case involves wartime espionage conspiracy with potential death penalty if convicted.
In Birmingham Alabama 4000 CIO ore miners ended a walkout at Tennessee Coal Iron and Rail road Company mills in Fairfield and Ensley with lines withdrawn. An additional 17000 idle workers were noted and wage disputes sparked wider labor unrest across rail and steel sectors.

Cmdr Hugh Scott of Philadelphia and Lt Cmdr Henry J Latham of New York arrived on active duty with the navy en route to join the Marines on the Korea front. President Truman reportedly decided to name Edith Sampson a Chicago Negro lawyer as a delegate to the United Nations general assembly in New York next month. The move follows a State Department proposal to counter Russian propaganda portraying Negro Americans as an oppressed class.
Washington August 14 The army expands its recruitment for volunteers among enlisted women reserves not in organized units. The prior call targeted those with special skills. the new appeal includes all enlisted WAC reservists not in organized reserves.
