Eisenhower and David Enrich Fishing at Fraser Ranch

President Eisenhower and his grandson David arrived at a Fraser Colorado ranch to fish a stocked pond created by local friend Aksel Nielsen. The two plan to stay through Sunday and return to Denver, with a warm Fraser welcome and a lighthearted election quip from a local elder noted.

Washington flood conditions critical as towns evacuate

In Washington North Carolina three fourths of the town was under water with riverfront areas 4 to 6 feet deep. National Guard trucks and about 250 troops were deployed to aid in evacuation as Pamlico River rose further and Hurricane Diane worsened the flood. Water now threatens homes and stores near the river and highway 17 traffic is halted.

Burke Named New Chief of Navy in Historic Ceremony

Adm. Arleigh A. Burke succeeds Adm. Robert B. Carney as chief of naval operations at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. The transition features 17 gun salutes and a Navy-wide emphasis on nuclear propulsion while Hurricane Diane disrupted plans to swear in aboard a carrier. Burke, 53, rose to fame in World War II and becomes one of the youngest CNOs. Carney is 60.

Gallagher Trial May End Today

The court martial of Sgt. James C. Gallagher, 23, accused of collaborating with Reds and murdering three fellow prisoners in North Korea, nears its close as his defense testimony concludes. He denies the killings and says earlier testimony misrepresented him, claiming camp dislike and favor with captors influenced impressions. Prosecution rebuttals follow, including Marine Set. Troy Williford who testifies Gallagher left his squad for a month at Chinese regimental headquarters in a voluntary study group.

Indians Move On Goa Amid Nonviolent Invasion March

Eight hundred Indian National Congress demonstrators trudged toward Goa as a border clash loomed. Police killings earlier this week prompted a 3,000-strong Belgaum rally with Praja Socialist members leading a plan to enter the Portuguese enclave.

Kluckhohn Plans To Enter Appeal

Richard Kluckhohn 21 of Evanston Illinois plans to appeal his involuntary manslaughter conviction from Wake Superior Court. Attorneys Fulton and Manning will file August 29 with Solicitor Chalmers an assignment of errors and transcript testi mony for review by the North Carolina Supreme Court. If no objections arise the case will be docketed in October.

One of 10 Most Wanted Men Nabbed in Pa

Charles Falzone a 42 year old fugitive on the FBI 10 most wanted list was captured in New Bedford near New Castle Pennsylvania ending an eight year manhunt. He used the alias James LaVelle since 1947 and faced a Tonawanda robbery warrant. Falzone did not resist arrest and was found with a large cache of firearms.

Rock Hurling Injures American Officer On Korean Causeway
