North Carolina violent crime drops as larceny rises in 1976

Raleigh AP reports that murders rapes robberies and aggravated assaults fell by 7 percent in 1976 while overall crime rose 4.14 percent. Larceny was the sole major category to increase, according to figures from the state attorney general’s office.

Burglary Suspect Hangs Self in Tree

Athens, Ga. A burglary suspect Peggy Ray Bowman, 22, died after hanging herself from a tree as police tried to talk her down. Clarke County police said an Athens man, C. Anderson, accused Bowman of the burglary. Officers waited for rescue personnel when she died Monday night.

Drought Re e by Rain Sweeps North Carolina

Thunderstorms moved through a wide North Carolina area causing minor damage and aiding drought relief. Greensboro Point airport recorded 2.59 inches of rain with street flooding. In Wilson County three people were slightly injured by lightning and two farm workers were struck near their barn. A 15 year old Elm City girl Tina Dorsey remained in satisfactory condition after a nearby strike.

Off-Season Fares Set for New York London Flight

Geneva AP reports six airlines agreed on off-season New York to London fares of 146 dollars one way and 256 dollars round trip to rival Skytrain. London tickets priced at 64 pounds and 149 pounds reflect tariff and exchange rate differences. Tickets valid Sept 15 to March 31 with 2900 seats weekly per direction on Trans World Airlines and Pan American jets.

A Georgia judge set August 29 for the trial of Roosevelt Watson the first of the Dawson Five charged in the murder of Gordon Howell at a rural Dawson grocery. Five defendants face consecutive trials with possible dismissal of charges if Watson is acquitted.

Desperate Bronx Boy George Curet Ends Life at 10

In a 12 story Bronx project, 10 year old George Curet hanged himself with a belt in apartment 61 at 580 Castle Hill Avenue while his 6 year old brother Bruce waited nearby. Neighbors recall a lone quiet child who cared for his brother as mother and older brothers worked. Bruce refused to kick out the chair when asked, leading to George's death by his own action. A police spokesman called it definite death by own action.
