Army Fliers Decorated For Evacuations
More than twenty army air force officers and men were decorated with the Silver Star for gallantry in the aerial evacuation of nearly 5 000 wounded soldiers and refugees from Burma. The awards were announced at army air headquarters in India and include Colonel Caleb V. Haynes and Colonel Robert L. Scott Jr. The Burma operation used a shuttle service of cargo planes with RAF and China National Airways transports and was carried out without loss of a single American plane or patient. The effort was studied as a model for evacuations where other transport is impracticable.
