Criteria Set For Locating North Carolina State Zoo
The State Zoo Authority in Asheboro issued a 14 point set of criteria for a proposed five million dollar state zoo site. The site should cover about 1000 acres, be donated tax exempt, and allow the authority zoning control within a one mile radius. Chairman N W Pope urged immediate site selection and a study recommends an initial 150 thousand dollar push plus a 1.5 to 2 million dollar challenge fund before any land purchase or fundraising drive. Andy Griffith joined the advisory board as the meeting at the Holiday Inn gathered city and county officials from the Piedmont area.
