Governor William B. Umstead will meet reporters every Thursday with 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. slots on alternate weeks to accommodate both morning and afternoon papers. The plan follows his return to office after a heart attack.
North Carolina Exchange Club delegates selected new officers after an address by State Motor Vehicles Commissioner Edward Scheidt. Outgoing president C L Russell of High Point left the post, while national president W Harry Jack of Dallas will speak at tonight's installation. An executive meeting and reception for Jack opened the three day convention yesterday.

The State Utilities Commission authorized R D Jackson to operate a water system in Shady Brooks Kannapolis serving 65 customers for 17 years, noting Jackson did not realize his system was a public utility under commission jurisdiction. The gas company was ordered to justify why it should not supply Draper with gas service, and welfare officials reported declines in old age grants while hospitalizations for indigent cases stay high.
Prisoners returning from Communist camps recount the execution of a fellow escapee and harsh pressure to confess. Stefano Salerno and three others describe being forced to discuss treatment, while some Americans are held for charges and await repatriation following the armistice. United Nations delegates from 16 nations met at the U N mission in New York to bridge British United States disagreements over including India and the Soviet Union in the Korean political conference. Britain insists Russia and India must be represented for a real settlement, while the United States says only nations that fought for the U N should be at the talks. South Korea’s Syngman Rhee urged unification and northward action in Seoul today. The rift centers on who may participate under the armistice agreement.
Adm. Arthur Radford took oath as chair of the joint chiefs of staff at the Pentagon succeeding Gen. Omar Bradley. Defense Secretary Wilson praised both leaders and Bradley received an embossed resolution for 42 years of service and world peace efforts. Bradley completed a four year term as the first permanent chairman of the unified armed services planning group.
An entire 50 bed field hospital was airlifted from Donaldson AFB Greenville DC to Altus AFB in eight hours by the 18th Air Force. The operation used four C-119s to Frederick and C-122 transports for the final 25 miles. The unit is designated the 1st Aero Medical Group under the 63rd Troop Carrier Wing Heavy.
In Patras Greece the deadly quakes that struck Ithaca Kefallinia and Zakinthos appear to ease with feeble tremors. International naval and air forces press a massive relief operation as Greek US Britain and Israel ships bring aid and evacuate victims leaving thousands homeless and a death toll potentially near 1000.
Governor Umstead declined to state whether Walter Anderson, head of the state prisons, will be kept or replaced. Atlantic hurricane Barbara moved off the New England coast after heavy rains and strong winds. It passed near Nantucket and Cape Cod causing gusts up to 60 mph while about 200 miles at sea and moving northeast. Authorities reported no damage or calls for help. The storm prompted evacuations and claimed several deaths and over a million dollars in damage across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic.
James Miholick, 17, of Honolulu tops the national Road E-O driving contest with 884.5 of 1000 points, winning a 1250 prize. A Huntsville girl, Anne Whitfield, placed 14th with 795.5 points amid tests on road, simulated road, and written sections.
